Pro Staff Question - How Can I Become A Better Bass Fisherman

Hi Tommy,

Thank you for your email and the information about your favorite fishing spot.

There are two styles of fishing that come to mind to catch these fish.

First, you need to fish a 6 inch whacky worm on a size 2 (not 2/0) octopus bait hook with a built in weed guard.

This will help with your tangles when retrieving the lure.

Several companies make these (VMC, Gamakatsu and Trokar) and you should cast the worm as close to,the cover as you can.

As you bring the worm back, twitch and pause it.

When you pause, count to five before twitching the worm again.

Bites will be aggressive and you will need to set the hook quickly or the fish will spit it out!

Second, you may want to get yourself a small ¼ to a ½ ounce single/double blade spinnerbait.

This is a great little lure, for covering a lot of water very quickly.

Strike King make a really great one with a double hook.

I have caught a number of big fish on this tiny spinnerbait.

One of Bass on Hook's Pro Anglers provides a tutorial on how to fish with spinnerbaits. Check it out.

Good luck and keep me posted on your success.

Please say hi to your dad for me too!
