Public Hearing on Summer Flounder Regulations Set for March 29

March 14 , 2007

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will hold a public hearing on proposed amendments to the Tidal Finfish Regulations governing summer flounder at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29 in DNREC's auditorium, Richardson and Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover.

Under an agreement between the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission 's Summer Flounder Fishery Management Board, the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service, Delaware is required to cap the summer flounder recreational harvest at 76,608 fish for 2007. The harvest cap has been adjusted downward 34 percent from last year's level of 116,000 fish because of slower than projected rebuilding in the stock.

At the hearing, a suite of 10 management options will be presented, including proposed minimum size limits between 17 and 18 inches, various creel limits that range from 1 to 4 fish per day and seasonal closures. Public comment received at this meeting will become part of the public hearing record and help guide the Department's decision on final regulations for the 2007 fishing season.

To submit comments or request additional information, please send mail to the Fisheries Section, Division of Fish and Wildlife, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901, call 302-739-4782 or email Rick Cole at . The record will remain open for written or email comments until 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 2.
