Przekurat Leads Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour Event on Mississippi River

May 02 , 2007

RED WING, Minn. – BP Pro Jason Przekurat of Stevens Point, Wis., along with his partner, Kenny Brenner of Moline, Ill., caught five walleyes weighing 23 pounds, 12 ounces to lead day one of the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour event presented by Evinrude on the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Minn., the Second regular-season event of the 2007 FLW Walleye Tour. With a $2.71 million total purse, including the no-entry-fee $675,850 Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour Championship on Lake Erie at Cleveland, Ohio, Sept. 27-30, and television coverage on FSN (Fox Sports Net), the FLW Walleye Tour is bigger and better than ever.

With a full field of 150 pros and 150 co-anglers, anglers are competing for their share of a $509,300 purse, including as much as $100,000 for the winning pro and $18,000 for the winning co-angler.

“When it goes this good, it almost seems too easy,” said Przekurat, who has amassed more than $140,000 in career earnings with FLW Outdoors. “The fish seemed to be more aggressive now that the spawn is over. We were fishing a small area adjacent to a backwater lake. I think the fish were spawning in the backwater lake and this is the first place they hit as they move out. We got a really good boat number and arrived at our spot really early. We got in there and got what we needed really fast. We already had out limit by 9 this morning.”

“I'm in a later flight tomorrow but I am hoping there isn't a lot of pressure in the area I was fishing from other competitors by the time I get there. If there isn't I'm planning on doing the same thing again tomorrow.”

Being in really close quarters with several other anglers, Przekurat was reluctant to reveal any information about his pattern but to say he was using live bait.

Rounding out the top five pros are BF Goodrich Tires pro Dustin Kjelden of Brookings, S.D. (five walleyes, 20 pounds, 13 ounces); Ken Schoenecker of West Bend, Wis. (five walleyes, 19 pounds, 5 ounces); Chris Burns of Davenport, Iowa. (five walleyes, 18 pounds, 11 ounces); and Robert Crow of Paterson, Wash. (four walleyes, 18 pounds, 1 ounces).

Kenny Brenner leads the co-angler division. “The lord was shinning on me today,” said Brenner, who has two top-10 finishes and $6,505 in career earnings with FLW Outdoors. “I have never been leading one of these before. I have a couple of top-10's but this is great to have the lead. Today was great. We caught just what we needed.”

“My pro tomorrow says that he is on fish. I am staying hopeful and I am going to give it my all and see what happens.”

Pros and co-anglers fish for a combined boat weight. Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Darrell Archey of Great Falls, Mont., Kevin Bruer of Robbinsdale, Minn., John Parker of Kingsley, Mich, and Sally Blain of Hopkins, Mich.

The Red Wing Visitors and Convention Bureau is hosting this event. Anglers launch daily at 7 a.m. from Bay Point Marina located at 1429 Levee Road. Thursday and Friday's weigh-ins will also be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday's weigh-in will be held at the Wal-Mart store located at 295 Tyler Roach South in Red Wing beginning at 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend daily takeoffs and weigh-ins, which are free and open to the public.

Pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day and fish for a combined boat weight. Pros compete against other pros, and co-anglers compete against other co-anglers. The full field competes during the three-day opening round for one of 10 final-round slots based on their three-day accumulated weight.

Weights carry over to day four, with the winner determined by the heaviest four-day weight.

Every angler who receives weight credit in a tournament earns points, with 150 points awarded to the winner, 149 to second, 148 for third, and so on. These points determine angler standings. The top 50 pros and 50 co-anglers based on year-end points standings will advance to the 2007 FLW Walleye Tour Championship.

The FLW Walleye Tour Championship is the most lucrative event in professional walleye angling, with guaranteed cash awards for the entire field. A guaranteed cash award of $100,000 plus potential sponsor bonuses totaling $50,000 will go to the FLW Walleye Tour Championship winner for a total pro award of $150,000. The champion co-angler will win a guaranteed cash award of $11,000 plus potential sponsor bonuses totaling $11,000 for a total co-angler award of $22,000.
