DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers Investigating Fatal Boating Accident

April 04, 2005 Delaware’s Fish and Wildlife officers are investigating a fatal boating accident at Concord Pond, east of Seaford. The body of the operator of the boat, Peter Thibodeau, 43, of 3062 McDowell Road, Bridgeville, Del., was recovered this morning by Sussex County paramedics.

Division officers responded to the boating accident Sunday, April 3 at approximately 11:45 a.m. The Poor Boys Fishing Club was holding a small tournament on the pond when the accident occurred.

According to Division Sgt. Troy Trimmer, who is investigating the accident, a passerby noticed a boat lodged against the dam yesterday with no one onboard. Firemen from Blades, Seaford, Laurel and Sharptown, Md. responded to assist with the search. The boat eventually fell over the dam and fire company divers were able to obtain the boat but unable to locate the body.

At 5:40 a.m. this morning, Sussex County paramedics recovered the body after observing it in the spillway. The paramedics transported the body to Nanticoke Hospital for delivery to the medical examiner.

Sgt. Trimmer’s preliminary findings indicate that high water due to heavy rains may have been a factor in the accident. Most likely, the boat got too close to the dam and the force of the water may have ejected the operator overboard into the dam. Investigators are waiting the results from the medical examiner.
